Tulay Ng Kabataan

February 08, 2020

Tulay ng Kabataan is a non-profit organization that has been providing the street children of Manila with love and professional care since 1998. Upon his Eminence Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle’s initiative, The Lord’s Flock (TLF) Catholic Charismatic Community started sending their youth to share God’s Word, and the fire of faith to the young people in Tulay ng Kabataan (TNK).

Last February 8, 2020, I, along with a few members of the New Generation went to TNK. The sky was threatening to send rain, but by God’s grace we pushed through with the outreach. Atop the building of TNK was a basketball court full of youth. As we gathered for our Praise and Worship, a small fire ignited within me. Seeing the faces of the youth there, I saw so much potential, and I was ready to share the fire I had received. After a very joyful Praise and Worship, Bro. Kent Galido, one of the Head Stewards of the New Generation, gave a beautiful talk about the 12 Keys to a Powerful Prayer. Contrary to what most people believe, the youth who were attending were very attentive and responsive. I saw that they genuinely wanted to hear the Word of God.

A while after the talk was a short break where the New Generation Members were given the chance to talk to the youth personally. They were very friendly and open to us, telling us about their studies and the dreams they wanted to pursue. It was incredible to think that they were once just roaming the streets. Most people tend to see street children as delinquents. Some of us may see kids in the streets and worry more about our own safety than how to help them. It is true that there are a lot of troublesome kids out there, but the youth in TNK were proof that people can change, and that there really is hope for the future.

Soon, it was time for the workshops. It surprised me that a lot of them were so eager to try something they had never tried before. I was tasked to teach them how to sing, and to teach them the songs we sang during Praise and Worships. Admittedly, it was very difficult, but seeing how eager they were, we all pushed through. We, the youth of the New Generation, all saw it as an amazing opportunity to teach them how to praise and worship God from the heart. We were only given a short time, but by God’s grace, they were able to learn the song “Let Go” by Hillsong. I actually think the song was very fitting. It was about letting go, and letting God. It is about letting go of our worries, our doubts, we let go of the things that lead us down the wrong path, and we let God. We let God lead us to the light and we let Him change us for the better. I believe it is very difficult for one to let go of things they got used to. Things like vices, bad habits and recklessness, but what I saw in the youth of TNK was exactly what the song said: they let go of their past and let God change them.

After the workshops, we all went to TLF’s weekly General Assembly. Seeing all the youth dance and sing so eagerly for God made everything that day worthwhile. I learned so much from the experience, and I am filled with more determination to keep helping. What I see in TNK is hope, especially for the kids in the streets who seem hopeless. It really makes one believe that with God, nothing is impossible.
